The MenACWY vaccine protects against four strains of meningococcal bacteria (A, C, W and Y), which can cause serious illnesses like meningitis and septicaemia. This vaccine is safe, quick, and highly effective, helping protect not only vaccinated individuals but also others in the community.
How is it given
One quick injection is given into the upper arm.
Who should have it
A catch up program is offered by school aged providers up to Year 11. After this time they can still receive Men ACWY vaccination via their GP until age of 25 years.
Why it matters
Meningococcal disease can develop quickly and may lead to serious complications such as meningitis or blood poisoning (septicaemia). Teenagers and young adults are more likely to carry and spread the bacteria. The MenACWY vaccine helps protect against four key strains and reduces the risk of severe illness. Getting vaccinated helps protect you and those around you.
Side effects
Side effects are usually mild and short‑lived.
They can include:
- redness, swelling, or tenderness at the injection site
- headache or general tiredness
- mild fever, nausea, or loss of appetite
- occasionally, muscle or joint aches, rash or dizziness
